MVA Plain Language

MVA Plain Language

In order to get your learner’s permit or drivers’ license from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Association, you have to pass a knowledge test. And all the information you need – from driver safety tips, to highway sign explanations, to traffic laws – is in the 56-page Maryland Driver’s Manual.

We are pleased to report that the MVA has recently updated the language in the manual to ensure that it is fully written in plain language! Plain language is designed to be clear, concise, and easy to understand, avoiding jargon and other difficult turns of phrase.

The MVA is working on updating the language of the test itself to ensure it is written in plain language too.

This is a big win for accessibility. At SCI we are dedicated to building a World for Everyone, in which everyone can thrive in their personal lives and communities. Plain language will remove unnecessary barriers to receiving a learner’s permit – and that’s a great thing!

That’s not the only positive change that the MVA has recently made to the Maryland Driver’s manual, though. The department is currently in the process of translating the manual to a total of 12 languages, allowing more people to take advantage of the information within and pass the knowledge test without undue difficulties!

Currently, the manual is available in seven languages:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Traditional Chinese
  • Vietnamese
  • French
  • Korean
  • Nepalese

And there are more to come. Keep an eye on this blog – we’ll update it when new languages are available! To access the driver’s manual in all its available languages, click here.
