As we uplift stories of people supported, Sidney, Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) at Service Coordination, connected with Byron about his inspiring path to independence.

What makes you unique?
Byron: I am hard-working, friendly, kind, and always willing to help others. When I want to achieve a goal, I will give my best effort and communicate with my support team to help find the strategies to reach my goal.

How do you overcome challenges in your daily life?

Byron: I overcome challenges by having open communication with my team, who I trust. I appreciate my team’s support in reaching my goals and communicating, including my SCI Service Coordinator, Residential Supervisor Tony, and my parents. My team helps me to use informed decision-making techniques while allowing me to advocate for myself and make my own choices.

What activities or hobbies bring you joy and fulfillment?

Byron: Some activities that bring me joy and fulfillment are bowling with my Special Olympics team, spending time with my family, shopping, and playing video games. I also enjoy working at my job.

Can you share a proud moment or achievement you’ve experienced?

Byron: A proud moment I have experienced includes earning my driver’s license and buying my first car. With my residential team’s support, I was able to save money using my ABLE account. Reaching my goal wasn’t easy and took some time, but I didn’t give up.

First, I studied for my Learner’s Permit and attended multiple driving schools for extra driving practice and support. Then, I went to purchase my first car completely on my own, with the funds I had saved up! Now, I can drive myself to work, see family and friends, and spend time in the community, which will help me increase my independence.

What message would you like to share with others?

Byron: Having a supportive team to help you reach your goals is very important.

Is there a myth about disabilities that you would like to dispel?

Byron: With the right support and effort, you can achieve many goals people may not have thought were possible.
