Calvin’s Story: Relearning Independence After Vision Loss

Calvin is a foodie, devoted father to Breonna and Shamera, and someone who enjoys staying active. Years ago, he was in a car accident that caused a severe eye injury, followed by an infection and multiple surgeries that ultimately resulted in Calvin losing his eyesight. As he adjusted to this life‑changing transition, Calvin knew he needed support to remain safe at home and continue building the life he wanted.

Through this process, Calvin connected with Service Coordination, Inc. (SCI) and began working with Jenifer, one of SCI’s Supports Planners. Jenifer took the time to understand Calvin’s needs, priorities, and goals, starting with what mattered most to him. She helped connect Calvin to Blind Industries and Services of Maryland (BISM), guided him in obtaining a Metro Access card, supported him in getting a new white cane, and shared resources for braille education. Jenifer also helped Calvin secure an appointment with the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) to ensure he had access to the right long‑term supports.

Cooking has always been an important part of Calvin’s life. He loves trying new foods, exploring restaurants, and spending time in the kitchen. One of his most meaningful goals was to be able to cook some of his favorite meals again. Jenifer recognized that supporting this goal also meant supporting the people closest to Calvin. She worked closely with his daughter, Shamera, sharing accessible recipes and instructional videos so the whole family could be part of the process.

Through regular check‑ins and home visits, Jenifer ensured the support strategies they were using were practical and truly helpful. In collaboration with Calvin’s DORS case worker, they arranged for color‑coded stickers on Calvin’s stove, allowing him to safely identify controls.  (Although Calvin is blind in both eyes, he is able to perceive some light, so the colored stickers were the perfect solution for him.) This teamwork made a real difference and Calvin was soon cooking again.

Since relearning to cook in ways that work for him, Calvin has prepared meals like hamburgers and chicken wings, regaining a sense of independence and joy. Achieving this goal gave him the confidence to set new ones. Calvin is now working toward employment, with interests in grocery store cart retrieval or stocking roles. He has begun updating his resume with support from Jenifer – and his daughters – and is exploring braille classes to continue building new skills.

Today, Calvin feels more confident, motivated, and optimistic about his future, with the pride and support of his daughters and Jenifer is proud to support him. Calvin’s success reflects what’s possible when people receive individualized, respectful support focused on their goals.
