Celebrating James: Autism Acceptance Month Spotlight

April is World Autism Acceptance Month, which inspires us to move beyond awareness. It calls us to actively promote understanding, inclusion, and equitable access to opportunities. At SCI, that means listening deeply, honoring each person’s strengths and preferences, and ensuring their voices are centered in planning and service delivery.

As April draws to a close, we spotlight James, whom SCI is proud to support. We invite you to work with us to continue advancing attitudes and actions that create communities where autistic individuals and their families can thrive.

James is a middle school student who brings curiosity, determination, and a growing confidence to everything he does. Recently, James has developed a strong interest in luxury cars. He has built an impressive collection of Hot Wheels and loves talking with others about different types of cars and the kind he hopes to own someday. Right now, his favorite car is a BMW, and he enjoys sharing what he knows and learning even more from conversations with others.

James receives a variety of supports through his Individualized Education Program (IEP), including speech, occupational, physical, and vision services. Through his connection with SCI, James and his family are also supported in navigating services and celebrating the progress he continues to make.

At the start of the 2025 school year, he transitioned to middle school. At his most recent IEP meeting, his teachers shared how proud they are of how well he has adapted to this new environment.

Over the past year, James also made meaningful progress in his mobility. Previously, navigating stairs was challenging and required him to take one step at a time. Today, he is able to walk up and down the stairs with a typical pattern and can even carry a book while doing so. With occasional reminders to look ahead while navigating stairs, he continues to grow more confident and independent. His progress reflects the strong collaboration between his school team, his family, and the ongoing support and coordination provided through SCI.

James is on a path filled with possibility, and we are proud to walk alongside him and his family, together with our community partners, throughout his journey.

We invite you to learn more, ask questions, and partner with SCI as we work to create inclusive, supportive communities where autistic individuals and their families can thrive.
