Celebrating Disability Employment Awareness Month: Stories of Purpose, Possibility, and Achievement

October 20, 2026

Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) recognizes the value and talent that people with disabilities bring to our workplaces and communities. It is a time to celebrate achievements, challenge assumptions, and highlight the importance of creating opportunities where everyone can pursue their goals and contribute their unique strengths.

At Service Coordination, Inc. (SCI), we have the privilege of supporting individuals as they explore career aspirations, pursue education, launch businesses, and build meaningful futures. This Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re spotlighting four inspiring stories that demonstrate the many pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and personal fulfillment.

Turning Passion into a Business: An Entrepreneurial Journey

For Stacey, employment meant creating her own opportunity. Guided by a love of crafting and supported by her Coordinator of Community Services and support team, Stacey set a goal to start her own business. What began as a dream became reality when she launched Crafts by Stacey and showcased her handmade creations at a community event. Stacey confidently engaged with customers, managed sales, and shared her talents with pride. Her journey demonstrates how entrepreneurship can provide a meaningful avenue for employment, independence, and self-expression.

Building a Career Through Education and Determination

After experiencing life-changing health challenges, Leon chose not to let setbacks define his future. Through determination, therapy, and person-centered support, Leon has regained independence and is pursuing higher education with a clear career goal in mind. Today, he is completing prerequisite courses at Howard Community College and plans to enter a Radiology program, with aspirations of becoming a Radiology Technician and later specializing in MRI technology. Leon’s story illustrates how employment journeys often begin with education, perseverance, and a vision for what’s possible.

Designing a More Inclusive Future

At a young age, Nadia is already making an impact. A student at the Maryland School for the Blind, Nadia discovered a passion for adaptive clothing design and saw one of her creations featured in a major retail marketplace. As she explores college programs in fashion merchandising and related fields, Nadia is building a future centered on innovation, accessibility, and inclusion. Her story reminds us that when talents are nurtured and ambitions are supported, possibilities can expand far beyond expectations.

It’s Never Too Late to Pursue a Goal

For Wanda, employment represents a renewed sense of purpose. After facing challenges related to health, mobility, and depression, Wanda partnered with her SCI Supports Planner to identify meaningful goals for her future. One of those goals was returning to work. With support and connections to resources such as the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), Wanda began exploring pathways back into the workforce. Her story is a powerful reminder that career aspirations do not have an expiration date and that meaningful support can help people reconnect with their dreams at any stage of life.

Celebrating Every Employment Journey

Disability Employment Awareness Month is about more than jobs. It’s about recognizing the strengths, ambitions, and contributions of people with disabilities while promoting a future where everyone has access to opportunities that align with their goals and interests.

Whether launching a business, pursuing higher education, developing innovative solutions, or re-entering the workforce, Stacey, Leon, Nadia and Wanda demonstrate the power of person-centered support and the importance of believing in what’s possible.

At SCI, we are honored to walk alongside people as they pursue lives filled with purpose, independence, and opportunity. This month and every month, we celebrate the many ways individuals contribute to their communities, workplaces, and the world around them.
