Leon is a resilient, determined person with a deep interest in Egyptian culture, a growing passion for gardening, and a drive to keep learning, especially in radiology. Known for his integrity, intelligence, and organization, Leon enjoys being outdoors, shopping, and connecting with his community. He also uses technology to stay informed and engaged. With the loving support of his mother, who serves as his caregiver, Leon continues to thrive at home after relocating from California to Baltimore County to be closer to family.
When his Supports Planner Tiffany first began working with Leon, he had recently experienced two massive strokes that significantly affected the right side of his body, his dominant side. One occurred in California, and the other happened while he was on a plane to Maryland. These medical challenges drastically changed his daily life, but Leon responded with determination. He taught himself to write and complete daily tasks with his non-dominant hand. At first, he was confined to bed during meetings, needed his mother’s physical assistance to walk short distances, and had difficulty holding conversations because of a speech impediment. Since then, Leon has made remarkable progress. He now walks independently in the community with a cane, and consistent speech therapy has helped him communicate clearly and confidently.
Tiffany helped Leon navigate community-based resources and access the supports he needed to continue moving forward. Working with therapists and providers, she helped connect him with physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as free and low-cost art and music therapy, peer support groups, and stroke survivor networks offered in person and online.
To support Leon’s goals in a holistic, person-centered way, Tiffany facilitated a Charting the LifeCourse (CtLC) meeting with Leon and his mother. Together, they used CtLC tools to define Leon’s vision for a “good life” – one centered on education, independence, wellness, and meaningful community participation. The process helped identify practical steps toward his goals, including continuing his education and strengthening daily living skills. Tiffany continued revisiting the framework during routine monitoring, offering guidance and encouragement as Leon made measurable progress.
Today, Leon is building a vibrant, independent life rooted in purpose and progress. He attends recommended therapies, pays his own bills, and researches resources to support his goals. He is completing prerequisite courses at Howard Community College and plans to enter the Radiology program, with the long-term goal of becoming a Radiology Technician and eventually specializing in MRI technology. At home, Leon has also found pride and peace in gardening, recently growing a thriving cucumber plant, an accomplishment that reflects the care, patience, and dedication he brings to every part of his life. With support from his mother and Tiffany, Leon continues to inspire others through his perseverance, positivity, and commitment to growth.
Leon’s journey reflects the heart of SCI’s mission and core values in action, honoring each person’s unique vision for a good life while providing support rooted in integrity, respect, collaboration, and compassion. Through person-centered planning, trusted relationships, and a focus on possibility, Leon has continued to build independence and pursue the goals that matter most to him. Each step forward, whether in the classroom, in the community, or in his garden, shows the power of resilience, meaningful support, and a life guided by purpose.
