Katrell’s Journey: Building a New Vision for the Future

At 33 years old, Katrell has faced challenges that could have easily derailed his future. A Baltimore County resident, devoted father, and proud member of the community where he grew up, Katrell has repeatedly demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity.

After spending more than a year rebuilding his life following incarceration, Katrell experienced another life-changing event in 2022 when he became a victim of gun violence and lost his vision. Adjusting to life without sight required tremendous determination, but with the support of family and friends, Katrell remained focused on maintaining his independence and continuing to move forward. Today, his mother serves as his full-time care provider through the Community First Choice program, ensuring he receives consistent support while remaining in his home and community.

When Katrell connected with Ciera, his Supports Planner, he began exploring new possibilities for his future. Through the Charting the LifeCourse framework, Katrell was able to identify goals and focus on what mattered most to him. Together, they developed a plan that would help him pursue greater independence and reconnect with opportunities that once felt out of reach.

One of Katrell’s biggest goals was returning to work. With support from Ciera, he connected with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), where he continues to build skills and learn strategies for navigating new environments and opportunities. This partnership has provided a pathway toward employment and renewed confidence in his abilities.

Beyond employment, Katrell remains committed to personal growth and family. He enjoys exercising, spending time with his children, and exploring new ways to enjoy activities he once loved, including discovering audiobooks as an alternative to reading. Most importantly, he considers being a present and supportive father among his greatest accomplishments.

Looking ahead, Katrell has set ambitious goals. He is exploring entrepreneurship and working toward establishing an LLC with the long-term dream of launching a trucking business. He is also considering earning his GED to expand future opportunities. With encouragement and guidance from his Supports Planner, Katrell continues to take meaningful steps toward creating the life he envisions for himself and his family.

Katrell’s aspirations extend beyond personal success. He hopes to become more involved in the community where he was raised through volunteer work and one day host a neighborhood resource fair. His goal is simple but powerful: to help ensure children in underserved communities have access to the same opportunities and resources available elsewhere. Together, Katrell and Ciera are working to turn that concept into reality.

The Impact

Katrell’s story illustrates the power of person-centered planning and the life-changing difference that meaningful support can make. Through partnership, determination, and a focus on possibility rather than limitation, Katrell is building a future defined not by the challenges he has faced, but by the goals he continues to pursue. With SCI’s support, he is creating new pathways toward independence, employment, community involvement, and lasting impact.
