Cathy is a charismatic woman who makes friends easily. She loves collecting books on tape and antiques, and she has built meaningful connections in her community, including a close friend who visits her often. Like many older adults, Cathy values her independence and the comfort of her home.
When Janis, her Supports Planner, first began working with Cathy, she was facing a difficult moment. Cathy was at risk of eviction after finding it harder to care for her apartment, her belongings, and herself in the ways she once could. Despite these challenges, Cathy was clear about what mattered most – she wanted to remain in her home and regain stability. She was open to support and deeply appreciative of any help she could receive.
Because of the strong relationship they built, Janis quickly recognized both the urgency of Cathy’s situation and her desire to remain independent. She worked closely with Cathy and her apartment management team to create a path forward – securing an agreement that if services could begin quickly and the apartment could be brought back to a safe condition, eviction would not move forward.
Janis coordinated with the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and advocated on Cathy’s behalf, helping move the process forward quickly. Within just two weeks, services were approved, and support began. With help, Cathy’s apartment was cleaned and decluttered, and items that were no longer usable were removed – creating a safer, more comfortable space for her to live.
Today, Cathy is making meaningful progress toward her goal of aging in place. With the right supports, she has restored her living space and is building routines to maintain it. More importantly, she has the support she needs to stay safe, healthy, and connected in her community.
Cathy’s story is a reminder that with the right support at the right time, older adults can continue to live with dignity, independence, and a sense of belonging – right where they call home.
