Pets have a special way of bringing comfort, structure, and joy into our lives. Whether they are encouraging us to step away from our desks, helping us stick to a routine, or simply making us smile after a long day, animals can play a meaningful role in supporting mental health. Their companionship reminds us to slow down, be present, and care for ourselves in the same gentle ways we care for them.
As we close out May and both National Pet Month and National Mental Health Awareness month we asked some of our SCI coworkers about their pets and how they help support their mental health.
Cookie: A Constant Companion
For Patreace, Cookie Simone Gayle has become much more than a pet – she is a steady source of comfort and connection. Cookie joined the family on April 28, 2024, after a heartfelt prayer and a promise that once the closet was cleaned out, a dog could finally come home. From the moment she arrived, Cookie made it clear that her favorite place was right by Patreace’s side, quickly becoming both a loyal companion and an unofficial co-worker.
Cookie helps bring balance to each day in simple but powerful ways. She keeps the family on schedule for bus stop drop-offs and pick-ups, and she seems to know exactly when the workday has gone on long enough, often hopping into Patreace’s lap as a gentle signal that it is time to rest. When stress begins to build, Cookie encourages a reset by nudging Patreace outside for fresh air, a walk, and a moment to recharge. Her presence has become a source of calm and comfort for the whole household.
Cookie may stay busy as a devoted sidekick, but she is also a great reminder to pause, take breaks, and enjoy life. In that way, she supports mental wellness not just through companionship, but by modeling the importance of rest, joy, and paying attention to our own needs. For Patreace, Cookie is a daily reminder that caring for ourselves can begin with the smallest moments.
Lovebug and Sophie: Bringing Joy and Routine
For Riley, Lovebug (Buggy) and Sophie support mental wellness in countless everyday ways. Their presence helps create structure and accountability, encouraging routines that make home life feel more manageable and grounded. They also bring happiness simply by being themselves – their personalities, playful moments, and familiar companionship make a real difference.
Like many pets, Buggy and Sophie also have a way of lightening the mood when it is needed most. Whether it is a surprise appearance on a video call or a silly moment that sparks laughter, they offer the kind of joy that can shift the tone of an entire day and they can be a meaningful source of support, comfort, and emotional well-being.
Rocco: A One-of-a-Kind Best Friend
They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but for Morgan, that title belongs to Rocco. More than a pet, Rocco is her little buddy, her partner in crime, and her miniature best friend. Day in and day out, he brings the kind of unconditional love that can make all the difference, especially on days when life feels a little heavier and spirits are running low.
Rocco has a way of bringing joy into everyday moments, whether he is making the family smile, tagging along for a drive, or sharing a snack. His presence is a reminder that while all positive connections in our lives matter, the love of a pet is truly unique. This National Pet Month, Morgan is especially excited to celebrate and spoil Rocco the way he deserves for all the comfort, companionship, and happiness he brings.
As we recognize both National Pet Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, these stories offer a meaningful reminder of the many ways pets support our well-being. Through companionship, routine, comfort, and joy, animals like Cookie, Buggy, Sophie, and Rocco help make everyday life a little lighter. This month, we celebrate not only the pets who bring so much love into our lives, but also the important role they can play in supporting emotional wellness.
