Katrell is a 33-year-old resident of Baltimore County, where he lives with his mother and children. Proud of his roots, Katrell spent his childhood in Baltimore City, a connection that continues to foster a deep sense of community and shape him.
In 2022, after more than a year and a half of rebuilding his life following his release from incarceration, Katrell experienced a life-altering event—he was a victim of gun violence and he lost his vision. The loss of his sight significantly impacted his ability to navigate the world. With unwavering support from his family and friends, Katrell managed to maintain a sense of normalcy and independence. His mother now serves as his full-time care provider through the Community First Choice program, allowing him to receive consistent and compassionate care at home.
Since connecting with his Supports Planner, Ciera, Katrell has grown in trust and confidence. He particularly enjoys the Charting the LifeCourse (CtLC) framework, which helps Katrell articulate new dreams and aspirations, as well as his personal goals for a better life. One of his primary goals is to return to work; with Ciera’s support, he is now able to connect with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS). Katrell works closely with DORS and is actively learning to navigate new environments and opportunities.
Outside of his professional development, Katrell enjoys working out and spending quality time with his children. Before losing his vision, he had a passion for reading and is now open to exploring audiobooks as a new way to engage with literature.
Katrell is now exploring entrepreneurship with the help of his SCI Supports Planner. He is working toward starting his own LLC with the long-term goal of launching a trucking business. He is particularly interested in the logistics and operations involved in running a successful company. Additionally, he is considering pursuing his GED to further expand his opportunities.
A short-term goal for Katrell is to become more involved in the community where he grew up. He is actively seeking volunteer opportunities and has expressed a desire to host a resource fair in his neighborhood in the future. Ciera is excited to support him in bringing his dreams to life: ensuring that children in underserved communities have access to the same resources and opportunities as those in more affluent areas.
