Goal in Motion: Amon’s Journey to Independence

In honor of Developmental Disabilities Month, we’re honoring the individuals with disabilities we support who inspire us every day. Today, we invite you to meet Amon, a person supported by the Coordination of Community Services (CCS) program at Service Coordination, Inc.

For three years, Amon has been a dedicated part-time employee at Baltimore/Washington Medical Center, where he works as a custodian.

Last year, Amon shared with his coordinator of community services that he wanted to learn how to drive and get a car. Together, they mapped out the steps to make that goal a reality. The first step was enrolling in driving school. Although Amon was interested in online classes, his CCS encouraged in-person instruction to ensure he had the hands-on support and individualized guidance he might need.

They registered together and met with the instructor to talk about who Amon is, what motivates him, and what he hopes to accomplish. With that foundation of understanding and support, Amon moved forward with confidence.

He successfully completed his driving course, passed all of his in-class exams, and earned his certificate of completion. With continued determination, he scheduled and passed his written learner’s permit exam. Amon now has his learner’s permit and is preparing for his road test in the coming months.

Earning his license will allow him to visit family and friends and access his community with greater independence. Amon’s journey reflects what can happen when a goal is paired with planning, encouragement, and perseverance.

This Developmental Disabilities Month, we recognize Amon and are proud to support him as he continues moving toward the future he envisions for himself.
