For 20 years, Service Coordination, Inc. (SCI) has helped people across Maryland navigate complex systems, access meaningful supports, and live the lives they choose. What began with strong local roots has grown into a statewide organization grounded in person-centered support, community connection, and a deep commitment to the people and families we serve.
Throughout July and August, we shared a series of facts in recognition of this milestone year, offering a glimpse into our history, growth, innovation, and impact. Together, they tell a larger story: one of dedicated Team Members, trusted partnerships, and an unwavering mission to support people in making informed choices, building meaningful connections, and living fully in their communities.
From Local Roots to Statewide Impact
SCI’s story began as an initiative within The Arc of Frederick County. Over the past two decades, SCI has grown from those local roots into an organization making an impact across Maryland.
That growth reflects more than expansion. It reflects the evolving needs of the people and families SCI supports and the organization’s continued response to those needs. As systems have changed and communities have grown, SCI has remained focused on helping people access the services, resources, and opportunities that support independence, dignity, and choice.
Built by Dedicated Team Members
A milestone like this is only possible because of people. SCI is proud to celebrate 46 Team Members who have been with the organization since 2006, when SCI became an independent organization.
Their dedication, experience, and commitment have helped shape SCI’s story. They have seen the organization grow, adapt, and respond to new opportunities while keeping people at the center of the work. Their long-standing service is a powerful reminder that SCI’s impact is driven by Team Members who bring compassion, professionalism, and deep knowledge to their roles every day.
Expanding Support Through SPS
In 2017, SCI saw an opportunity to use its case management expertise to support more people. Since then, SCI’s Supports Planning Services (SPS) have helped people with complex medical needs live independently in their communities.
For nine years, SPS has strengthened SCI’s ability to support choice, independence, and connection. This work reflects a central part of SCI’s mission: helping people access the supports they need in ways that are responsive to their goals, circumstances, and communities.
Meeting People Where They Are
SCI has long believed that meaningful support happens in community. In 2016, years before remote work became essential, SCI completed the transition to a fully community-based workforce.
This forward-thinking model allows Team Members to meet people where they are: at home, in their communities, and in the places that matter most to them. It also reinforces SCI’s commitment to flexible, responsive, and person-centered support rooted in real-life connection.
Leading Through Collaboration
SCI’s impact extends beyond direct support. SCI also established Maryland’s statewide Community of Practice for Coordination of Community Services providers, helping bring providers together to share knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and support quality services across the state.
This leadership reflects SCI’s belief that stronger systems are built through partnership. By creating space for providers to learn from one another and work together, SCI has helped strengthen the broader network of support available to people and families throughout Maryland.
A Statewide Presence Rooted in Local Community
At one point, SCI had 13 offices across the state. Today, SCI operates out of two offices in Owings Mills and Frederick, while Team Members remain embedded in communities statewide.
This evolution reflects SCI’s continued commitment to staying connected, responsive, and close to the people and families we support. From Allegany to Washington Counties and communities across Maryland, SCI’s work remains grounded in local relationships and person-centered service.
More Than 16,000 People Supported
Today, SCI supports more than 16,000 people across Maryland. This number represents growth, but more importantly, it represents lives impacted, connections made, and people supported in living the lives they choose.
Every person has their own goals, strengths, needs, and story. SCI’s role is to walk alongside people and families as they navigate services, make informed decisions, and build the connections that help them thrive.
Honoring the Past, Looking Toward the Future
This 20-year milestone is an opportunity to reflect on where we started, celebrate how far we have come, and look ahead with purpose.
For two decades, SCI has remained committed to supporting people with dignity, respect, and choice. As we look to the future, that commitment remains unchanged. We are grateful to our Team Members, partners, community stakeholders, and the people and families who have trusted SCI to be part of their journey.
Together, we celebrate 20 years of impact and the continued opportunity to build stronger, more connected, and more inclusive communities across Maryland.
