As we close out Developmental Disabilities Month, check out a few common myths about individuals with developmental disabilities below. By learning and sharing the truth, we can reduce stigma and create more inclusive communities.
Misconception:
People with can’t make their own decisions.
Reality:
People with developmental disabilities have the right and ability to make their own choices. Support exists to independence, not take it away.
Misconception:
People with developmental disabilities can’t have relationships or social lives.
Reality:
People with developmental disabilities build friendships, form romantic relationships, and create families. Love and connection are universal.
Misconception:
People with developmental disabilities can’t work or support themselves.
Reality:
People with developmental disabilities contribute across the workforce, including founding and running their own businesses.
Misconception:
People with developmental disabilities are “inspirational” just for existing.
Reality:
People with developmental disabilities aren’t here to be “inspiring,” they’re here to live their lives, just like anyone else. Respect means treating them as equals, not as someone different or extraordinary.
