Impact Story: Monyette

November 7, 2025

Monyette, a person supported by SCI, has faced numerous health challenges throughout her life, including a cancer diagnosis, multiple strokes, and a seizure disorder.

She began working with SCI at the end of last year, when she was connected to Supports Planner Godson Joseph. Together, they met regularly to assess her needs and identify the services and supports that would allow her to continue living safely at home. One of Monyette’s biggest wishes was to have an emotional support dog—a companion she felt would help her maintain her independence. While this wasn’t something the Maryland Department of Health could provide, Godson was determined to help make it possible.

He reached out to six different organizations to learn more about the process of securing an emotional support dog, ensuring he had the knowledge to guide Monyette through every step. In December, Godson heard back from the Ronnie Stanley Foundation, which invited Monyette to apply for their program. He assisted her with the application, helped gather all necessary documents, and even facilitated a phone interview with the foundation.

In May 2025, Monyette finally met her new companion: Leo, a small white Yorkie. Although she once imagined herself with a German Shepherd, Monyette knew instantly that Leo—quite the opposite of what she had pictured—was the perfect dog for her. Already, Leo has proven invaluable, alerting Monyette when he notices changes in her demeanor and staying close during seizure symptoms. She is deeply grateful for both Godson’s support and the loyalty of her new four-legged friend.

Now, with Leo by her side, Monyette is setting her sights on her next goal: expanding her community engagement. She hopes to take part in craft workshops and volunteering opportunities, and Godson is actively supporting her in making those dreams a reality.

Stories like Monyette’s reflect SCI’s commitment to empowering people to live independently and fully, with the right supports in place.
